The client came to us with a simple brief: the plot is covered in waste, make it go away. Construction offcuts, old household items, weeds growing over the top of it all - the usual story for land nobody has dealt with for a while.

Jobs like this tend to get put off: the volume looks small, but clearing it by hand is slow and unpleasant work. With machinery it takes a shift.

How we did it

A compact Yanmar excavator and a six-wheel dump truck came onto the plot in the morning.

The excavator beats hand-clearing here: the bucket picks up mixed rubbish together with the layer of topsoil it has sunk into, and loads it straight into the truck. The truck ran to the landfill and back - several trips across the day.

Once the plot was empty, we went over the surface with the excavator and graded it out. It's a small thing that matters: clearance leaves holes and heaps behind, and if you don't touch them the plot looks little better than it did before.

Result

One day - and instead of a dump site, a clean, level plot. All the waste went to the landfill and was disposed of properly, not dropped off "somewhere". The client signed the job off the same evening.
